Ok … I am have a small admission.I am a musicals nut.I love musicals and have since I was a kid. One of my current favourites is Wicked. From when I first heard about Wicked I knew it was going to be one that I would like and seeing did not disappoint .. Ok should explain alittle about Wicked.
Wicked is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. The story is based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, a parallel novel of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum’s THe Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and her relationship with Galinda, later Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. The plot begins before and continues after Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas, and includes several references to the events depicted in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. It is about their relationship as it develops from school, their entanglements in the corrupt government of Oz and unto Elpha’s fall from grace.
It is a great musical … especially for the girls. The two main leads are of course women and provide some really powerhouse songs for them to sing – the most obvious being Defying Gravity (see clip from Tony awards below) but also other great songs like ‘What is this feeling?’, ‘Popular’ and ‘For Good’.
What made me think of it today … well I was reading an article about Universal making it into a film. That would be great. With the right cast and production values it could be one of the best movie musicals. Rent was a perfect example of a great transition from stage to film. One of the things I loved about Rent also was the fact that they were able for the majority of the core cast to return the Original Broadway Cast. This might prove to be more difficult however I hope it is something that could be done. I think both Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are both amazing performers that could not be matched for bringing their characters from the stage to the screen. And with their growing profiles on the small screen, thanks to Glee, I think they have the ability to carry it also off commercially … OK I acknowledge that I am heavily biased … but it would be awesome for them to make the transition.
