I am very excited about the approaching arrival of one of my all time favourite Broadway stars to Sydney … Idina Menzel. For those of you who do not know her … she is an American actress, singer, and songwriter who first rose to prominence in the original cast of Rent, a role which she reprised for the 2005 feature film adaptation. She followed this success with originating the role of Elphaba in Wicked, a role which she won a Tony Award … and as these are 2 of my all time favourite musicals, it is not surprising I am a fan. Just need to get tickets now.
So today I wanted to share one of my favourite songs Idina sings in Wicked, “I’m not that girl”. It is performed about half way through Act 1. I think is beautiful … if I was still singing regularly I would love to perform it. In the song, Elphaba who is beginning to discover romantic feelings towards Fiyero (male lead), reflects on her life and circumstance and reaffirms that she “wasn’t born” to be loved. Sad , beautiful and … relatable.
