Autism and Travel Insurance

by bronwyn October 4, 2012
written by bronwyn

Recently I have travelled to Indonesia for work and as part of my preparation … and because I like to be prepared I wanted to organise Travel Insurance. This was my first overseas trip for work since my children had been diagnosed with Autism. They weren’t travelling with me … but I guess I had it in the back of my mind when I was organising my travel insurance.

Asian woman wearing a hat and standing in front of a plane

Waiting for the plane

I had thought getting the travel insurance should be pretty simple … I could not believe how wrong I was. What I discovered very quicly that while you might think that there are 1000s of different travel insurance policies out there .. well really that is not true. In fact there are really on a small number of business that offer travel insurance and underwrite for other businesses (that more often than not just copy and paste the PDS from the underwritter). And many of them aren’t really fans of people with Autism … well at least their polices aren’t

How does having a child with Autism that is not travelling impact your ability to get travel insurance?

I know this might seem to be a bit confusing and not make alot of sense … but this is how it works. According to all of the insurance companies I spoke to Autism would be counted as a “Pre-existing Medical Condition”. Pre-existing Medical Conditions of not just the travelling party, but travelling companions and non-travelling relatives need to be considered when getting travel insurance.

Why would that be important? Well if you need to cancel your trip and be repatriated quickly because of something that relates to a Pre-existing Medical Conditions that could be very expensive. That is why you get travel insurance. But how can Autism be seen as a potential cause a claim on travel insurance. Well when I was talking to the insurance companies I got different responses to how they would consider the following.

Scenario – Your child runs out onto the road and gets run over by a car. They are hurt badly and you need to return home.

Response – All insurance companies said that they would pay for repatriation.

Scenario Expanded – I then asked if this could this change if it was known that the child had autism and that one of the aspects of their condition was that they had a fascination with cars and had a general lack of awareness of road safety.

Response – Mixed. Some said that they would pay, some not sure … a few said definitely not.

IMHO travel insurance companies are unfairly (and I wonder if illegally) discriminating against people with non-travelling relatives with Autism. Many don’t or won’t provide coverage for autism and potentially will twist things to extend unreasonably the impact on autism to cover well pretty much anything. This is just wrong.

What do you think?

Do you Backup Your Blog?

by bronwyn September 22, 2012
written by bronwyn
Back Up And Restore Keys For Data Security

Ask yourself this- when was the last time you‘ve backup your blog? What would you do if you lost all of the data on your blog and all you had left was your backup? You may think that you will never have a reason to it will never happen to you, but there are more reasons than just server crashes and hackers why you might need to use  backup to get your site back up and running … You can spare yourself the heartache of losing all of your hard work, if you bank on a data backup strategy that you can do yourself and this is the best insurance there is against the possibility of losing everything.

Back Up And Restore Keys For Computer Data Security

What are some of the reasons I might need to use a backup

  • Security Attacks – Since security threats are the most common way people lose their blogs, it’s the biggest reason you should have some kind of backup system in place.
  • Server Problems – I have heard lots stories of those who have had  servers that have crashed and they lost everything that was on their site.  Don’t think this can’t happen to you.  All of the hard work you put into your blog can be lost and it usually happens without any warning to prepare you for it.  But by having a  backup of your blog you can make sure that even if your server  melts down, you will be able to get your site up and running again in a matter of minutes instead of days and weeks.
  • Viruses and Malware – yes your blog can be impacted by Viruses and Malware too.
  • Problems with Upgrading Wordpress, upgrading plugins or installing new ones – There is a reason that Wordpress asks you to back up everytime they have a major release.
  • Blogger – Your account can be disabled without warning if they feel you have ‘broken the rules’ and you can loose everything. Don’t risk it.

How often should I backup?

Well that depends on how much you are willing to risk (and potentially lose).  It is your decision.

How many backups should I keep?

My general recommendation is that you keep at least three backups and keep them in three different places or forms. This prevents problems if a single backup becomes corrupted or damaged.

Can backups be automated?

Yes. There are several methods of automating the backup process available, and we’ve listed some below.
However, it is highly recommended that you back up those auto backups with a manual backup once in a while to guarantee that the process is working.

What are my backup options?

Here are a collection of some of the backup options that are available out there for Wordpress and Blogger.

Wordpress – Premium Cloud Services

  • Vaultpress – VaultPress provides realtime, continuous backup and synchronization of every post, comment, media file, revision and dashboard setting across at least two separate cloud services in addition to the Automattic grid, ensuring no loss of content. It is good but it costs.
  • BlogVault – BlogVault  backups everything off your site, and has a Test Restore where it puts a working version of your site Restored on their website to prove it all works!
  • CodeGuard – With CodeGuard all plans allow for daily automatic backups, monitoring, and restores without limitation. The main difference is that with the Enterprise plan you are allowed the option of a concierge restore. A concierge restore is when one of their developer team takes personal time to oversee the process of your restore from beginning to end to ensure its success.
  • BackupBuddy – This premium WordPress backup plugin is designed to not only backup your entire WP site but to help you restore it and migrate it elsewhere when needed. As suggested this plugin backs up everything associated with your WP website including plugins, themes, widgets, and the database.

Wordpress – Free Cloud Services

  • Wordpress Backup to Dropbox – this plugin makes backup very easy and simple.
  • Wordpress for Google Drive – Great for regular users of Google Drive.
  • Blogbackupr – Works with both Wordpress and Blogger.
  • Online Backup For WordPress – This backup lets you backup 50 MB of your database on their secure servers. This isn’t a complete solution as it only backs up your WP database.

Wordpress – Other Free Plugin Tools Services

  • Snapshot is a new, easy-to-use plugin for creating quick snapshots of your database. Snapshot Backup sends a copy of your Database, current WP Core, all your Themes, Plugins and Uploads to the FTP repository of your choice. It’s especially useful for testing and rolling out new functionality to your website. You can play with new plugin and/or theme settings with the full knowledge that you’ll be able to roll back your database tables.
  • WP DB Manager – The plugin permits the WP blog owner to schedule automatic backups of his site’s database (via email or server backup) or manually download it. It also allows the admin to select which database table items to backup and either optimize, repair, delete, or restore the database. Perhaps the most enticing aspect of this WP backup plugin is that it is very easy to install and use. The major drawback of this plugin however, is that it merely backs up your database and not your entire WordPress blog.

Wordpress – the Old Fashion way

Plugins can be really useful for backing up your site but depending on its size it might be better to do it from the sever. You can run a script to backup your WordPress site to FTP. Another option is to set up a cron job to automatically backup your WordPress site. If you have a very large database, WPMU.org has a guide that will help you back it up smoothly without timeouts.

Blogger

I am not a blogger user (anymore) and I have found trying to get some automated blogger backup tools alot harder than Wordpress. Of course you can manually export your blog from Blogger (as you can also do from Wordpress) but the range of options for backing up your blogger site automatically seem to me rather limited .. here is what I could find.

  • Blogbackupr – Works with both Wordpress and Blogger
  • BloggerBackup – Blogger Backup has a simple, straightforward interface and allows you to save posts and comments, with the ability to filter by date if you want.
  • BlogCollector

So what are you waiting for … go and back up your blog. While I hope it is not the case I can assure you that some time in the future you will be glad that you did.

What are you doing? – Film Distributed to all Australian Schools

by bronwyn August 22, 2012
written by bronwyn
What are you doing? Autism Awareness Film Movie Poster

I am very excited that Autism Awareness announced yesterday the distribution of their film “What are you doing?” to over 10 000 schools across Australia. “What are you doing?” is a short film which aims to teach school aged children about acceptance and understanding of their peers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The film addresses some of the fears children may have about ASD, answers their questions and helps show them how they can be a great friend to a classmate on the autism spectrum. The film includes enlightening interviews with the brothers, sisters, cousins and friends of children on the spectrum. These friends and family members share their thoughts and experiences on what it is like to share their life with someone on the spectrum.

Through beautiful imagery, engaging narrative and quirky animation, the film sends a message that children with autism should be accepted, supported and encouraged by their peers to be a part of their community. I have seen it and it is a beautiful, wonderful film that I wish not just school children .. but everyone could see.

All primary, secondary, state and independent schools have received a copy of the film, along with accompanying teaching materials. So contact your local school, let them know how important the film is to your school community and encourage them to show it as widely as possible. More awareness simply means children on the spectrum will be better understood …

Please help spread the word. The path to a better world for all people with ASD starts with greater community understanding and awareness.

National Public Toilet Map

by bronwyn April 8, 2012
written by bronwyn
Disabled toilet with white tile on wall

The Department of Health and Ageing have funded National Continence Management Program the National Public Toilet Map (the Toilet Map). The map shows the location of more than 14,000 public and private public toilet facilities across Australia. Details of toilet facilities can also be found along major travel routes and for shorter journeys as well. Useful information is provided about each toilet, such as location, opening hours, availability of baby change rooms, accessibility for people with disabilities and the details of other nearby toilets.

I know I know … I am sure that there are a few of you sniggering right now but this is an important service that helps more than just the incontinent elderly (not that that wouldn’t be enough reason in itself .. figures suggest that 1 in 10 people over 75 suffer from incontinence).  But this is a very useful tool for pregnant woman and parents of small children … both in nappies, toddlers and toilet training time and children with autism and other disabilities.

What does the Toilet Map do?

Disabled toilet with white tile on wall

Disabled toilet

The Toilet Map provides:

  • the location of the nearest public toilet
  • details of opening hours, accessibility, parking and other features including availability of baby change rooms
  • the capacity to plan toilet breaks for short or long journeys
  • the ability to save toilet information and trip plans

How do I access the Toilet Map?

The Toilet Map is accessible:

  • normal web  and mobile browsers
  • iPhone App
  • Global Positioning System (GPS) – you need to download the information and load it onto your GPS. I think the key is to plan ahead.

How do I use the Toilet Map?

  • browse the map in a particular State/Territory
  • search for toilets by postcode, town or suburb, near a specific address or location such as a sports ground
  • plan a trip with the Trip Planner and enter your starting and end address to get a turn by turn description for the quickest route and the toilets along the way.

Is there any way to search for baby change facilities or accessible parking?

When you find toilets near an address, at a point of interest or at a latitude/longitude you can select additional toilet features and opening hours in the right hand column of the page.

There are a number of different features listed on the National Public Toilet Map, including baby change facilities, sharps disposal, MLAK access and accessible parking.

What is an MLAK key? Am I Eligible? And do I need one?

MLAK stands for Master Locksmiths’ Association Key. The MLAK is a master key that fits into specially designed locks allowing 24 hour a day access to public toilets. Eligible people – those with a disability and a letter of authorisation from a doctor, disability organisation, local council or community health centre – can purchase a key that opens all accessible toilets displaying the MLAK symbol. For information about where to obtain keys or locks within your area, contact the Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia (phone 1800 810 698).

For me … not at this stage. But maybe when we get more into the toilet training. Knowing that no matter what the time and what the situation I would be able to utilise toilet facilities with the kids is not a bad idea.

I think it is a brillant idea. I have the app on my phone .. I guess it is sort of like insurance. You never know when it might come in handy … and if it does you will be really grateful that you did.

Royal Easter Show 2012 – Last minute Show Planning

by bronwyn April 6, 2012
written by bronwyn
Royal Easter Show - Woolworths Hall

I have had a pretty hectic few weeks this last month so I am not as organised as I usually am for Easter and the Royal Easter Show …. which translates into I have done nothing. Very naughty of me. But does that mean that the show is out of the question … and the more pressing question … do I want to take the family this year?

First things first … what is possible to do when I have little time to organise

Last Minute Planning for the Royal Easter Show

1. Transport

Driving and Parking – (assuming you have got the Mobility Parking Scheme Permit)
According to the show website … Accessible parking is available at Sydney Olympic Park and can be pre-booked over the phone through Ticketek on 132 849. All vehicles must display a valid RTA access sticker and the RTA Mobility Parking Scheme permit must be shown upon payment to the cashier. Not sure if that would be sucessful at this late stage … but if you have a day in mind might be worth ringing up ASAP

Public Transport
Always an option and the cost includes travel to and from the Show on CityRail, Sydney Olympic Park major event buses, regular Sydney buses services, Liverpool to Parramatta T-way buses and Sydney Ferry services.  As from an economic perspective and the fact doesn’t require any further organisation it is perfect for the last minute show planner. But not always the right decision … how will the kids cope with a full day of being over stimulated and then hop on a train. Hmmm … not sure about this one.

2. Tickets

Tickets for people and children with Autism and other disabilities
If you have looked at the Tickets page for the Royal Easter Show … Yes you can still get special tickets for people with disabilities (PWD) and their carers for the Royal Easter Show. They just don’t communicate it that well on the website. The reason is that you can’t buy them from the website you need to speak to someone on the phone or when you get to the show.

ShowLink PWD tickets are available to those issued with The Companion Carer’s Card, The Disability Pension Card, an RTA Mobility Card, Children’s Healthcare Card or Vision Impaired Travel Pass. One complimentary Adult ShowLink ticket will be issued to the accompanying carer. PWD tickets can be purchased by calling the Show Ticketing line or from the Show entry gates. ShowLink PWD After 5pm tickets are also available and include one complimentary Adult ShowLink ticket for the accompanying carer. For more info, please call 1300 730 631 (option 2). Information from the Tickets FAQ page

Tickets for everyone else
Whatever way you look at it the Royal Easter Show is expensive … and that starts at the gate. While kids 3 and under are free .. YEAH. Adults are $36.00 and Children 4 and up are$ 23.50. Family tickets (2 Adults + 2 children) $107.

3. Planning for the day …using my tips from last year.

Lockers
A cornerstone to any successful trip to the Royal Easter Show … and IMHO this is for anyone is to make sure you get in early and get a locker. Lockers will be available for hire during the Sydney Royal Eater Show. You can find them:

    • opposite Showbag Hall (my personal favourite)
    • outside Woodchop Stadium
    • outside The Woolworths Fresh Food Dome
    • inside The Woolworths Fresh Food Dome foyer (until 8.30pm only)

Self service coin lockers are $2 each time they are used (IMHO not recommended). You can also hire a locker for the whole day for $8 with a $2 key deposit.

Trust me … at the end of the day you will thank me for this advice. Put the lunch bags in there … anything you don’t need to access during the day. Come back for lunch or whenever you need to add more or take out. They are brillant.

Plan for what you will see and Do
I think this one is a key thing. Make a plan of where you will enter and what you will see and in what order. Study the map. Download the iPhone App. If you want some ideas on what to do the Royal Easter show has a few suggested itineraries aimed at different age groups. I always try to get something that I know will be a big draw card not long after we arrive. I find that really helps to set a positive tone for the day. Also plan plenty of breaks and identify places where you can “check out”. Ideally as far away as possible from the Carnivals (I would even do as far as trying to avoid walking through there at all).

Plan for  all weather contingencies
As with anything that you plan days/weeks in advance bring things for all weather contingencies. However as you will have a locker. This is a great place to put this extra stuff.

Plan to bring plenty of food and drink with you
Not only with this save you money it will make it alot easier. Having food you know your kids can/will eat on hand saves you time (and potentially from tantrums) instead of waiting in line for food that would (in most cases) be inferior to what you would bring yourself. Again … remember you can store some of it in the locker.

Don’t do it alone
My recommendation is to have at least 2 adults and ideally at least 1 adult for every child plus 1. Last year I went to the show with 2 children and 3 adults. This made it alot easier and alot more enjoyable for everyone. It can be a great time to go out with grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Tag your children
While you do everything you can to make sure that they don’t run off. I think planning is always best. Last year I just used bright tags with their names on it but also would consider using the old fashioned marker pen on the t-shirt/arm or mobile number. Not sure … either way I know the key is to make it prominent.

To go or not to go … that is the question

To be honest … I am not sure. I know I love the show. Particularly the Food, Home, Lifestyle & Leisure and Arts and Crafts areas … and not to forget the awesome ladies from the CWA. But I am not sure after such a  busy month … and this being LittleMan’s first school holidays that I should put this in the mix. Hmmm … don’t know. My husband said that we should give the Sydney Family Show a try this year instead … maybe that is an idea.

I’m not a feminist, but…

by bronwyn March 27, 2012
written by bronwyn
2 girls in a pool laughing

Today I was reading MamaMia on a post about feminism and it really got me thinking. The main point of the post was about women not identifying themselves as feminists and the problems associated with that.

As self-described “strident feminist” and my hero Caitlin Moran says in her book How to be a Woman:

“We need to reclaim the word ‘feminism’. We need the word ‘feminism’ back real bad.

When statistics come in saying that only 29% of American women would describe themselves as feminist – and only 42% of British women – I used to think, What do you think feminism IS, ladies? What part of ‘liberation for women’ is not for you? Is it freedom to vote? The right not to be owned by the man you marry? The campaign for equal pay? ‘Vogue’ by Madonna? Jeans? Did all that good shit GET ON YOUR NERVES? Or were you just DRUNK AT THE TIME OF THE SURVEY?”

There seem to be a lot of women who are confused about the meaning of feminism. Lady Gaga in 2009 said: “I’m not a feminist. I hail men. I love men.

It made me think … do I consider myself a feminist? What is a feminist? What does it mean to be a feminist? Does feminism fit with the way I see the world and what I see as being important. Hmm … So after going through in my mind about my own ideas of what feminism is and if I was a feminist I thought I would look it up …

What is really … what is feminism? What does it mean to be a feminist?

I think that this word means different things to different people and is something that has evolved over time … and not always for the best.

Feminism is a collection of movements aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights for women. In addition, feminism seeks to establish equal opportunities for women in education and employment. A feminist is a “person whose beliefs and behavior are based on feminism.” Wikipedia – Feminism

For me the best definition I have found on feminism is from Stereotypes about Feminism: Myths About Those Bra-Burning Feminists Rebuked | Suite101.com and is built around the following core principles.

  • Women and men should be equal before the law and valued equally by society.
  • Changes in the law and in society need to be made to ensure a better life for women.
  • Violence and repression against women worldwide needs to end.
  • Women need to support each other’s decisions and cultural differences, and stand together as sisters.

So far … All sounds good to me. But is that all feminism is? No its not … And this IMHO is where a large part of the problem lies.

Feminist Stereotypes

International group of woman working together with their arms raised.

Women working together

There are lots of stereotypes about feminism but do they reflect what feminism ‘really’ is either. Here are a list of the top 15 stereotypes I could find and come up with about feminism and feminists.

  1. All people who label themselves as feminist believe in the exact same things.
  2. Feminists hate men
  3. Feminists are all lesbians
  4. Feminists are all like Germaine Greer
  5. Feminists are masculine and unattractive
  6. Feminists don’t shave
  7. Feminists are bra-burners
  8. Feminists are all socialists (or at least favour the left side of politics)
  9. Feminists have a single-minded agenda and are only interested in issues affecting women
  10. Men are not feminists
  11. Feminists hate the idea of family
  12. Feminist are angry and whine about everything
  13. Feminists don’t respect stay at home mums
  14. Feminists are all pro-choice
  15. Feminists hate God
Hmm … not so good. When you consider the stereotypes I can understand that many women do not want to identify themselves as a feminist if they mean all of these things too. But are they correct? Usually stereotypes have some basis in fact. Well … maybe for some feminists these are correct but not for all feminists. IMHO what some consider to be core to feminism others dismiss outright. Depending on what camp you sit you may have totally opposing views on a number of issues … so in that case … what is  feminism?

IMHO there are 6 board categories of feminism and they can have stricking difference in their outlooks and perspectives. (Types of Feminism: Liberal, Socialist, Third Wave, and Other Feminist Philosophies | Suite101.com )

  1. Liberal Feminism
  2. Marxist/Socialist Feminism
  3. Radical Feminism
  4. Third Wave Feminism
  5. Ecofeminism
  6. Black Feminism

Liberal Feminism

Liberal feminism is characterized by an individualistic emphasis on equality. According to this philosophy, society itself does not need a major overhaul, but rather laws need to be changed and opportunities have to be opened up to allow women to become equals in society. To a liberal feminist, evidence of progress is seen largely by the numbers of women in positions previous occupied by men, especially powerful positions. In the United States and much of the Western world, liberal feminism is the most mainstream form of feminism.

Socialist Feminism

Socialist feminism (sometimes known as Marxist feminism) is different than liberal feminism in that it emphasizes that true equality will not be achieved without major overhauls within society– particularly economic overhauls. Socialist feminists argue that there are fundamental inequalities built in to a capitalist society because power and capital are distributed unevenly. Thus, it’s not enough for women to individually work to rise to powerful positions in society; rather, power needs to be redistributed throughout society. Liberal feminists focus on individual empowerment, while socialist feminists focus on collective change and empowerment.

Radical Feminism

Radical feminism is similar to socialist feminism in that it emphasizes the need for dramatic social change in order to achieve genuine equality for women (and sometimes these two philosophies are grouped together). Radical feminists believe that society is extremely patriarchal, and until patriarchy is transformed on all levels, the system will remain unjust. A minority of radical feminists are separatist feminists, who believe that men and women need to maintain separate institutions and relationships.

Third Wave Feminism

Third Wave feminism is popular among younger women, many of whom are children of feminists from the 1970s (who are referred to as Second Wave Feminists). Similar to liberal feminism, Third Wave feminism is very individualistic. Although it does not reject political activism, Third Wave feminism is focused more on personal empowerment as a starting place for social change. Third Wave feminism celebrates the construction of individual identities in a complex, postmodern world, and invites women to define themselves as they wish from the smorgasbord of possibilities.

Ecofeminism

Ecofeminisim draws from and links together both the women’s movement and the environmental movement. Ecofeminism draws parallels between the domination and exploitation of both women and nature.

Black Feminism

Black Feminism posits that sexism and racism are inextricably linked, and that sexism will never be overcome while the system is still so fundamentally racist. This movement grew out of the discontent of African Americans women during the Women’s Liberation Movement in the 1970s, who felt their particular needs as minority women were not being addressed. The term “Black feminism” is often used to encompass the needs of all women of color.

So in the end what do I think? To be honest  I do not know. I know I agree with the core principles of feminism … but I am not sure which if any of the categories I subscribe to. I know that many of the stereotypes of feminism don’t relate t me … but maybe I am a Liberal feminist or a Third Wave feminist. I don’t know and to be honest I don’t want another label. I prefer to think I am an independent thinker that has views on a range of social issues and cares about openness, fairness and equity for all. But in saying that does that make me a feminist? And in the end does it matter?

What do you think? Do you think supporting the idea of feminism is important? Do you think that it is important that women (and men) identify as feminists? Do you have to subscribe to an ideology in order to believe common goals?

Getting An Assessment 2012 – Autism and Developmental Delay Diagnosis

by bronwyn March 12, 2012
written by bronwyn
Little girl with balloon

Here is my second instalment of posts my series of posts on Autism that I have been working on  leading up to World Autism Awareness Day and Autism Awareness Month in April. For this post I want to cover Assessment. I have written on this before … but after speaking with more people I have got some updated information … So I hope that this will be useful.

Time for an Assessment

I know after you first here the words Autism or the Development Delay are days that events that you will not forget for the rest of your life. Many feel like it is a hit to the gut … and one that it is just impossible to get your breath again … don’t worry you will. But what you need to do is work on getting an assessment ASAP. This is the key to getting, if required, access to funding, access to services and treatment.

The reason for why you should get started on this ASAP is

  • for government services they have waiting lists for everything. You have to wait to get diagnosed and then wait for access to services and treatment. The sooner you get on the lists the sooner you get diagnosed and then if appropriate access to treatment services.
  • some funding expires when your child reaches certain ages. The Federal Government’s specific program for funding early intervention unfortunately is one of these. You will often hear this being referred to as FaHCSIA. More information below

Organising Assessment

Step 1 – Referral

Most assessment centres require a referral from a Paediatrician. This includes the Children’s Hospital and Private Centres. I have found from our experience that if you get a referral from to the Children’s Hospital that private centres will also accept the same referral.

Step 2 – Organising Assessment – Children’s Hospital at Westmead – Disability Specialist Unit

The Children’s Hospital only does assessments where the child is suspected of having a developmental delay. If this is the case … I would recommend that even if you look at going down the path of getting a private assessment I think that it is worthwhile getting an assessment done through the Children’s Hospital Westmead – Disability Specialist Unit. We found that they are knowledgeable and caring … and used different tests to the private assessment centre (Griffith’s Developmental Scale) and they have connections to the Department of Human Services, Ageing, Disability and Home Care that appear to be helpful rather than you having to fight that bureaucracy to find the right person.

What you need to do is call the Children’s Hospital and speak to someone in the Disability Services Unit. They will be able to tell you the nearest centre to your home. Once you speak with them and and give them a copy of your referral they will tell you whether they may be able to offer an assessment.  If you are offered an assessment they will send you a long a very long questionnaire (20+ pages) that will ask you heaps of questions about their development. While it is a bit of a slog to get through, send it back ideally in a express post pack and keep the reference number. This way you can track and even have proof of delivery from the Australia Post website (http://www.auspost.com.au/track/).

Once you have submitted it you will be put on a waiting list for a date. You should receive the date within 6-8 weeks before your date. You will not be told this unless you ask and you will not be notified on the progress of your request unless they call with a date or if you call. They will call when you have a date and send out some paperwork before hand to help prepare you for what is going to happen. You will also get a call from a Case Worker before the date.

To give you an idea about our experiences and timelines.

  • LittleMan 2010 – I had submitted our paperwork on 25th November 2009 and I had confirmation that they had received it on that date. When I called up in January 2010 I was told that he was on the waiting list for a date (~6 months) and it would be at best sometime in May. We ended up being lucky that someone cancelled and we saw them in February.
  • AnotherChild 2012 – Paperwork submitted on 5th March 2012. Appointment for the 17th March (due to a cancellation)
It all just depends on what they have on their schedule. It might be 6 months … and it might only be a few weeks. They do their best with the resources that they have at hand.

Step 3 – Private Assessment

Depending on how old your child is Private assessment may be required due to their age. If your child is almost 6th … you want to get onto it ASAP and get a private assessment (that can sometimes be organised within a few weeks). I would recomend that you want a assessment completed t least 1 month before their 6th birthday to ensure access to FaHCSIA funding. There  many private assessment options available but I have only experience with Lizard and Autism Spectrum Australia (ASPECT) . Both of these services cost about $1000. However Medicare and private health fund rebates are available.

  • LittleMan 2010 – We used the Lizard Centre at Chatswood and found them to be very professional and we were able to get in for an assessment in only 3 weeks. They used 2 assessment tools – ADOS and ADI-R.
  • AnotherChild 2012 – Using Autism Spectrum Australia (ASPECT). They are getting assessed this week. Very positive experience thus far but will update when complete.
