I love the idea of R U OK? Day. Too many Australians today are affected by or suffer in silence with depression. Each year more than 2,100 Australians suicide. For each person that dies in this way, another 30 attempt to end their life (Lifeline). R U OK? aims to inspire all Australians to help to help people with depression and reduce our suicide rate by reaching out and making contact with others. Staying connected with others is crucial to our general health and wellbeing. Feeling isolated or hopeless can contribute to depression and other mental illnesses, which can ultimately result in suicide. Regular, meaningful conversations can protect those we know and love.
I don’t know … I am not an expert but maybe … just maybe this one conversation … just someone asking if they are OK … just someone saying “hey you matter” … might be enough to get someone talking and starting on the pathway to help. Just mabe this one conversation could make a big difference in someone’s life,
So tomorrow don’t forget … ask a friend, a relative, a work colleague, a fellow student .. or maybe the quiet mum at the playground just sitting by herself. R U OK?
